Carcieri Fix, H.R. 375, Passes the House

Today, H.R. 375, the Carcieri Fix, was passed by the House on suspension of the rules. The bill reaffirms that the Department of the Interior (DOI) has the authority to take land into trust for all federally recognized tribes under the Indian Organization Act (IRA). The legislation passed with approximately 323 votes. 95 members voted against the bill and 14 members abstained from casting a vote for or against.

The next step in the process is for the bill to be considered by the Senate. H.R. 312, the Mashpee Land Bill, also passed out of the House this afternoon.
