Senate Committee on Indian Affairs Field Hearing to Protect Tribal Cultural Items

The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs has scheduled a field hearing titled “The Theft, Illegal Possession, Sale, Transfer and Exploit of Tribal Cultural Items” for Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at 10:00am. Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) will preside over the field hearing, which will take place at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, 2401 12th Street, NW; Albuquerque, NM 87104. The field hearing will highlight the growth of illegal trafficking of Native cultural and sacred items and focus on the need to strengthen federal laws to stop the exportation and sale of items of tribal patrimony.

President Signs Continuing Resolution Through December 9, 2016

On Thursday, September 29, 2016, Congress passed and the President signed a continuing resolution (CR) to fund federal agencies and government programs through Friday, December 9, 2016. The CR approves funding at existing FY16 levels with a few exceptions. The bill also approved funding to address concerns from the Zika virus. After approving the bill, Congress adjourned to campaign for the November 8th election. Congress will return for a “lame duck” session on Monday, November 14th, during which it will focus on funding the government for the remainder of FY17, which began on October 1, 2016 and extends through September 30, 2017.
