Native Languages Workgroup to co-host 2014 Native American Languages Summit

On Friday June 20, 2014, the Departments of Education (ED), Health and Human Services (HHS), and the Interior (DOI) will be co-hosting the 2014 Native American Languages Summit titled, “Working Together for Native American Language Success,” as part of the work of the Native Languages Workgroup. The summit will be held at the Double Tree Hotel – Crystal City located at 300 Army Navy Drive, Arlington, VA 22202.

The goal of the summit will be to discuss ways to further support Native American communities teaching Native languages by improving accountability for educational progress and measuring success. During this conference, federal partners and organizations with Native Language programs will gather to discuss methods for measuring success. The goal is to work together as a team to ensure the preservation and acquisition of Native languages so that they may not only be revitalized, but to also ensure that Native youth have a command of the language from a linguistic and cultural perspective. Participants will discuss the challenges and successes of measuring oral and written American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian languages and will share best and most promising practices.
