SDPI Reauthorized for 1 Year

On Monday, March 31st, the Senate passed HR 4032, the Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014 (also known as the “Medicare Doc Fix”) by a vote of 64-35, which fixes a Medicare physician payment formula. A number of other Medicare and health care provisions were included as part of the bill. Section 204 of the bill reauthorizes the Special Diabetes Program for Indians (SDPI) for 1 year until September 30, 2015 at $150M. Previously, the House passed HR 4032 on Thursday, March 27th by voice vote. The bill will now go to the President for his signature.

The Senate Finance, House Ways & Means, and House Energy & Commerce Committees had sought a permanent “doc fix” which could have included a multi-year reauthorization, but being unable to reach an agreement on how to pay for the bill, they settled for a 1 year fix and a 1 year extension on all the other Medicare and health care provisions. However, this 1 year reauthorization of SDPI at least provides stability for another year for this important program.
