November 10, 2011, Senate Committee on Indian Affairs Legislative Hearing on Several Bills

The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs has scheduled a legislative hearing to examine several bills, including S. 872, Amendments to the Omnibus Indian Advancement Act to Limit Gaming on Trust Land for the Lytton Rancheria of California (sponsored by Sen. Feinstein D-CA), S. 1192, the Alaska Safe Villages and Families Act (sponsored by Sen. Begich D-AK), and S. 1763, the Stand Against Violence and Empower (SAVE) Native Women Act (sponsored by Sen. Akaka D-HI). S. 1763, the SAVE Native Women Act would reverse the Supreme Court’s 1978 Oliphant v. Suquamish Indian Tribe decision by recognizing tribal court jurisdiction over all offenders of domestic violence on Indian lands. The hearing will take place on Thursday, November 10th, at 2:15 p.m. EST in Room 628 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C.

Witnesses for live testimony are by invitation only, and a list will be posted on the Committee’s website once confirmed. The record will be open for two weeks after the hearing for written comments.
