The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs has scheduled a legislative hearing on a variety of bills affecting tribal interests. The hearing is scheduled to take place on Thursday, October 20th, at 2:15 p.m. EST in Room 628 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C. and will address the following bills:

· S. 134, Mescalero Apache Tribe Leasing Authorization Act;

· S. 399, Blackfeet Water Rights Settlement Act of 2011;

· S. 1298, Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium Land Transfer Act;

· S. 1327, A bill to amend the Act of March 1, 1933, to transfer certain authority and resources to the Utah Dineh Corporation, and for other purposes; and

· S. 1345, Spokane Tribe of Indians of the Spokane Reservation Grand Coulee Dam Equitable Compensation Settlement Act.

The hearing will examine Indian country broadband / telecommunication needs, telemedicine, online education, Internet commerce, and Internet gambling, among other issues.

The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs will host a roundtable discussion titled, “Building Secure Homelands: Housing and Infrastructure Development in Native Communities.” The roundtable will take place on Thursday, September 8th, at 1:00 p.m. EST in Room 628 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C.

The roundtable will be hosted by Loretta Tuell, Majority Staff Director and Chief Counsel for the Senate Indian Affairs Committee.

Topics the Committee will discuss include:

• Access to capital for sustainable community development
• Streamlining leasing and title issues for home sites on federal trust lands
• Infrastructure development opportunities for tribes and tribal housing agencies
• Promoting, recruiting, and employing a qualified workforce through quality housing
• Developing innovative housing partnerships between tribes and the private sector
