July 21st Senate Committee on Indian Affairs Oversight Hearing on Emergency Preparedness in Native Communities

The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs has scheduled a legislative oversight hearing on the protection of emergency preparedness in Native communities. The hearing titled, “Facing Floods and Fires – Emergency Preparedness for Natural Disasters in Native Communities,” will take place on Thursday, July 21, 2011 at 2:15PM in room 628 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building. Witnesses will examine the training, planning, and other related emergency disaster needs of tribal leaders and tribal emergency management personnel. Testimony will also discuss the gaps in authority under existing federal emergency management laws to provide tribal governments with direct assistance, as well as the need to amend current law to authorize tribal government emergency declarations.

Witnesses for testimony will be by invitation only, and a list will be posted on the Committee’s website once it is confirmed. However, the Committee will receive written testimony up to two weeks after the hearing date for the record.
